The red thread for this listed lateral apartment on one of London’s most beautiful garden squares began with a white box. With all traditional architectural features carefully pared away, this Georgian apartment was transformed by a former owner into the epitome of modernist purity: the perfect blank canvas for a gallery space to showcase Tollgard founders Staffan and Monique’s love of modern design.
The high ceilings and scale of the flat allow the bold, sculptural pieces of furniture to be seen as works of art in their own right. The apartment was recently (re) refurbished to meet the needs of a growing up family … with toddlers’ scooters now declared off limits, they were able to invest in some heirloom pieces to stand the next test of time. With a declared love of colour, pattern and texture, the apartment zings with energy.
Says Staffan: “My favourite place in the house is the open-plan living room on the ground floor. There is a more formal sitting room at the front of the house, then a small dining table defined by a beautiful Bocci pendant. The back part of the floor is the room we use the most. It’s a study, TV snug and playroom- a multi-functional, very practical space for all the family throughout the day. When I work from home the kids are able to use the rest of the room to play. I had no idea the Flexform sofa was going to make such a great den – a great advert for a truly modular design. At night we tidy up their toys and watch TV really comfortably, thinking about the dinner parties we might host one day …”
